This is how a thesis is created

1. Getting started
You can start working part-time alongside your studies, usually in the 1st or 2nd year of your Master's degree.
2. Familiarisation
You'll receive a comprehensive induction and, if necessary, have the support of the whole company, in two locations.
3. Customer projects
You will participate in Hefmec's customer projects and assist the Hefmec Project Manager from the start.
4. The subject of the work
The topic of the DI thesis is selected from client projects within 1-12 months, depending on the state of your studies.
5. DI project
The project on which the DI work is done is carried out like any other Hefmec client project.
6. Instructor
A Hefmec mentor will help you to define the scope of the work and give you lots of good tips on how to get the job done
7. Graduation
After graduation, you will have the opportunity to continue your career at Hefmec as a permanent employee.

Joona Haukipuro

At Hefmec since 2018

I started at Hefmec as a summer technician. On my second day of work, I got involved in a project for a customer in the automotive industry. I was nervous about how I would cope as a 3rd year student in Hefmec’s challenging projects, where I had to master not only machine design but also strength calculations with FEM. I was surprised how effectively Hefmec uses the knowledge of my colleagues and how easily I could get help from them. After the summer, I continued working on various design projects alongside my studies and I did my DI work for Hefmec in summer 2020. After graduation, I have continued to work for Hefmec as a full-time employee.

At Hefmec since 2019

I applied for a design job in summer 2019. I had completed my school courses, but I didn’t have a thesis. Hefmec found a suitable topic for an IoT project in production engineering. During the project, I designed and built several prototypes. I received help from the entire Hefmec staff to overcome the challenges of the project. The prototypes were tested at Aalto University. The guidance came from Hefmec and the supervisor from Aalto University. After my diploma thesis and graduation, I have continued working at Hefmec as a junior designer. One of my projects is the productisation and testing of a prototype in an industrial environment.

Andreas Rosas

At Hefmec from 2022

I was in my second year of a Master’s programme in Mechanical Engineering at Aalto University when I saw Hefmec’s job advertisement. I had heard of the company before and got the impression that they employ knowledgeable and motivated people. The interesting projects in the advertisement made me apply for the job, and I was glad I decided to do it. As soon as I started, I got involved in client projects in the role of a junior designer. In my first project, I designed a CE-marked lifting aid. This would not have been possible without a good orientation and the support of experienced colleagues who helped me in my new working environment.

The possibility of doing a thesis for Hefmec was already discussed during the job interview, and the topic was chosen after about a year of work experience. The work was related to a customer project to develop a machine for industrial use. The best thing about the work was the concrete aspect: the designed machine was manufactured and tested. It was particularly rewarding to see one’s own design work come to life.

My training gave me a strong technical background, especially in strength of materials calculations and FEM simulations, and I have actively used these skills in my work. In addition, the knowledge of manufacturing engineering and the courses on project work have proved useful. At Hefmec, I have also learned a lot about customer interaction and project management – skills that I have not had the opportunity to practise in such a practical way on the school bench.

Working at Hefmec relies heavily on teamwork and understanding customer needs. At the beginning of my career, I was nervous about my technical skills and how I would cope with customer encounters. However, I quickly found that colleagues were always there to help and support me – whether it was a technical problem or a customer communication challenge. The supportive atmosphere has helped me to develop both as a designer and as an interactor. Hefmec offers a wide range of projects in different industries, which makes the work varied and educational. At Hefmec you also have the opportunity to influence your own work and develop your skills in the way you want.

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Hefmec.

In the staff survey, our employees described us as: relaxed, modern, evolving, versatile, interesting and educational.

Hefmec’s management is committed to developing the company with determination, based on the ISO9001 quality system. We have received positive feedback from our employees on the systematic approach we have taken and the effort we have put into training. The company management is present and decision-making is open and honest. Management’s success is measured, among other things, by culture indicators, so the culture and health of the company as perceived by the employee is always on management’s agenda.

Hefmec projects are usually related to a development or investment project presented by our client. In these projects, we act as mechanical designers, project engineers, project managers and experts, with a particular focus on mechanical and production engineering.

Design projects often involve various production tools, such as lifting equipment. We also supply the products we design, so subcontracting and manufacturing quality control diversify the workload. Those who are interested also have the opportunity to work in sales. Customer projects range from one week to a few years.

Our customers buy from us specialised expertise in mechanical and production engineering. They need a good understanding of mechanics, materials and mechanical engineering. Our customers are also very satisfied with the service, communication and organisational skills of our hefmec employees. We are able to solve demanding production challenges and deliver projects to a high standard.

Hefmec has experience of using a wide range of design and calculation software and the design software is selected primarily according to the customer’s needs. We use SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, Creo, AutoCAD and Inventor.

We offer students and early-career engineers hourly jobs, graduate jobs and junior design and project engineering jobs. You will be given your own project sub-assignments to manage, and you will be able to deepen and apply your technical skills in a wide range of projects.

Professionals already in the workforce will be able to take on larger and more technically demanding tasks. They may become more involved in a particular area of engineering, such as strength calculations or joining techniques.

At Hefmec, you have the opportunity to grow and advance your career to the position of a Principal Designer or Project Manager. Your client projects will be technically demanding and you will be able to manage large projects and apply different technologies. Hefmec’s Principal Designers and Project Managers act as Hefmec’s representatives at the client interface, leading their own project team and acting as a team liaison.

We spend a lot of time in our recruitment process to understand what motivates people, what makes them tick and what makes them thrive, and what kind of working environment they thrive in. By doing this, we have been able to select employees whose future expectations we have been able to meet and who have performed exceptionally well.
